America on Two Wheels

BIKING COAST TO COAST IN SEARCH OF HUMAN STORIES

 Four months.

Two wheels.

One bicyclist.

In 2015, 36-year-old Chicago resident David King found himself at a personal and professional crossroads. Feeling bored and restless, he longed to strike out on a crazy journey in a quest for beauty, kindness, and inspiration as to where his life should go from there. Having taken up biking as a hobby, he consulted a map of the United States and, in a spur-of-the-moment decision, vowed to ride across the country — from San Diego to Miami.

Over the course of four months, America on Two Wheels: Biking Coast to Coast in Search of Human Stories, follows David’s journey as he pedals more than 3,000 miles across mountains, desert, bayou, and tropical flatlands, overcoming physical and mental challenges in pursuit of a destination he is not sure he'll even reach. Painting a tableau of adventure and a world of possibility in the vein of Jack Kerouac or Paul Theroux,
he introduces readers to an unforgettable cast of characters and their unsung acts of kindness.

David invites the reader to join him on a journey
through fear, doubt, patience, and discovery — not just across a continent, but toward a profound lesson of gratitude. Part travelogue, part memoir, part spiritual journey, America on Two Wheels is an ode to pursuing the open road with an open heart.

2016: The Journey

Why would anyone quit their job to ride their bike across America?

My goal in this journey was to seek beauty and kindness, to try to find God in interactions with everyday people. A real chance to open up my riding and see what I was truly capable of — to see how far I could push beyond my mental limitations.

At a time when I felt like I was not moving forward in life and in need of inspiration, I thought this would be a terrific way to get perspective.

2025: Nine Years Later

The world is a different place in 2025 than it was in early 2016. But I still believe in the fundamental goodness of humanity. In revisiting my four-month journey, I hope to inspire you to pursue YOUR crazy journey, whatever that may mean for you; to listen to others with an open heart, even when it’s difficult; and to practice gratitude for those who enrich your life in ways big and small.

“No act of kindness, no matter how small,” said Aesop, “is ever wasted.”

My next bike journey!

In 2025, I plan to bike through Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. Know anyone interesting I should meet? Please reach out and let me know!

“I biked not just to find beauty, but for the ability to see it. I biked not just to escape, but to come back to myself. I biked to see with my heart what my eyes couldn’t.”

— David King
